Timekeeping on Epaphus


Like most moons in the Universe, Epaphus is tidally locked to it’s parent planet (the red gas giant, Thoriam). This means that, not only does the same side of Epaphus always face Thoriam, but that the time it takes to orbit Thoriam is also the same as the length of it’s day (8.22 earth days).
The moon Epaphus’ day/month (commonly refered to as a “longday”) is so inhumanly long that it became necessary to divide it into eights units that more closely match the human circadian rhythm. As such, these roughly 24-hour periods are known as “circads”, and are themselves divided into 24 Epaphian hours.

The 8 Circads of the Epaphian “Longday”

Locally, these Circads can also be knowns as either:
the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th circad of the long day,
or the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th circad of the long night.
Which of the 8 Circads represent which part of the day or night depends on which part of the moon Epaphus one is on.
eg. At the Prime Meridian, Circad Solis corresponds with the 1st Circad of the long day.





Primary dates are listed in the “Epaphian Colonial Calendar” which uses as it’s base unit: “Epaphus Years” (the time it takes Epaphus’ and it’s parent planet, Thoriam, to revolve around their sun). These “Epaphus years” are equal to about 0.598 Earth years.


On average, there are 212.64 circads in an Epaphian year. That being so, every 3rd and 25th year on the Epaphian calendar there are 212 circads (or 26.625 longdays); every other year has 213 (or 26.5 longdays).
Also, every Epaphian year is divided evenly into 27 longdays, each of which turn over at the start of Circad Solis. Because of this, the year often begins somewhere in the middle of the longday. In these cases, the 1st longday of that year and the 27th longday of the previous year are one and the same.

     The forces of the Toliman Empire arrive at Epaphus and wage a space war of their own.
     Having forced the Phaethian forces to retreat back home, the Republic sends its own Defense Force back to Phaethon to finish the job it started a century earlier....

     At Alpha Centauri: The Third Phaethon War
The Republic’s Defense Force arrives at Phaethon and takes the war to the surface. After 14 years of bloody land war the republican forces finally have the upper hand when a dangerous new pathogen emerges which forces them to retreat.
The pathogen is so dangerous that the entire Defence Force is ordered to remain in the system. Some ships mutiny and return home anyway.

     At Alpha Centauri: The Toliman Holocaust occurs on Phaethon.
Civilisation on that planet is completely destroyed as the pathogen kills nearly the entire population.

     At Alpha Centauri: A fleet of Terran starships arrives at Phaethon to investigate, and immediately place the planet under quarantine.

After witnessing the devestation caused by the Xenopseudofungus (XPF-19), they agree to sign an accord with Earth which cedes the planet to the Terran Federation, allowing them to maintain a strict quarantine of the planet until the disease abates and it is deemed safe.

The Mutineer Massacre
     Hundreds of mutineered ships that have defied orders and left the Alpha Centauri System, are nuked one by one as they enter the Epsilon Eridani System by the Epaphian Republic, who cannot allow the pathogen to return to the homeworld.

Meanwhile, on Epaphus itself, the Republic has clamped down on all aspects of society in order to “be prepared” in case the pathogen ever reaches the surface.

     As can be imagined, this catastrophe and the heavy-handed response by the corrupt Republic stirs up civil unrest on the windy moon, precipitating several decades of political decline in a time when the Republic has been weakened by a century of interstellar war....

The Galaxy is invaded by the Darxtarian Empire which was thought to have dissappeared thousands of years earlier.

In the final battle of the war, the Omicron, a giant edifice situated around the black hole at the center of the Galaxy, is destoyed.
Because the Omicron facilitated all Faster-Than-Light travel and communication in the Galaxy, Kurellon III, along with all other worlds, is forever isolated from the rest of the Galaxy

Despite this isolation, the Kurellonians manage to maintain a civilisation of sorts on their cold moon for thousands of years after the Cataclysm.

But, unbeknownst to these people, a wave of deadly radiation, caused by the destruction of the Omicron, is racing across the Galaxy, destined to strike Kurellon III in roughly 45,000 local years.
